Designing for Print
Why design in CMYK and not RGB mode?
CMYK stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black – the inks mixed to produce your printed material. Both Digital and Offset printers use these colours for full-colour prints. They are designed to print in this mode so your best bet is to design in the mode that best suits it.
RGB stands for Red, Green, and Blue – the colours of light a computer screen mixes to make colours on screen. Designs in RGB mode can be printed by converting to CMYK, but the colours may get washed out, and look very different from what you had on your screen. To get the actual colour after printing, design in CMYK, and for screen bound or purposes, export to RGB.
Rich Black Text/Colour
For text areas, be sure to use 100% black with no other colour added to the text colour in the design. This will ensure no issues with registration during printing (especially for offset). No registration is perfect. With text appearing only on the black plate, registration will no longer be a problem. There are fewer or no issues in digital printing even though applying 100% of all 4 colours is likely to affect the quality of your print. In the case of offset, the text image will usually turn out blurred due to registration errors.
To get solid black areas of colour, you only need to add 30%, 30%, 30%, 100% in the CMYK order. This is enough and saves you finish troubles.
Image Resolution
Images used in your design must be of good quality and preferably, 300dpi.
“You get what you give.”
If your images are pixelated, our sophisticated printers and personnel will not be able to make it look any less pixelated in the final print so please make sure the images used are of very high resolution and size.
NB: Increasing the size and/or resolution of an image (for instance, a 500px x 500px image to 2000px x 2000px or a 72dpi image to 300dpi) will not make it any better in quality. You only increase the file size.
Print file Resolution & Size
When designing for printing, use 300dpi, and design in your actual finish size.
For instance, you want to print a poster on an A3 art paper. Ensure the canvas size is A3 with the resolution set to 300dpi (CMYK mode).
Bleed
Be sure to send all your artworks with at least 3mm bleed.
Bleed refers to an extra 1/8” (. 125 in) of image or background color that extends beyond the trim area of your printing piece.
Your project is printed on an oversized sheet which will then be cut down to size. This works easily and mostly on offset printing. With digital print, you will need to leave the bleed less the intended print paper as the printers automatically would never print to the edge of the paper.
What it means is, when designing an A3 poster intended for a digital paper print, for instance, do not design up to exactly A3. It’s either the areas close to the edges would be cut off or the image will be reduced to fit within the printable areas.
Crop marks are very important for trimming to the right size. Add these marks in the bleed area to aid accuracy during trimming.
Large Format
Resolution
For large format, the file resolution will depend on the size of the intended finished work.
Just to give you an idea; designs below 24 inches x 24 inches, use 300dpi. Use 100dpi for larger designs like anything above 36 inches x 36 inches. If you have any difficulty, do not hesitate to contact us through any of our available contact media. To be safe, send it in 300 dpi and we will do the rest.
Bleed | Crop Marks
For large format prints, crop marks can be in the form of an outline (in a visible colour) around the entire artwork not an external line in the bleed area. Hence, the bleed area is not important in this area.
Eyelets
Eyelets are fixed into banners which are to be hanged. They are made by punching holes in the banner material, usually at the corners, and protected from tearing with a seal locked on both sides by pressing them together. You will have to indicate whether you want that done or not while sending your file for large format print.
You do not need to provide that space in your design but rather just make us aware you will need that.
Print & Cut
When sending your work for print, indicate whether you want it print and cut or cut only. This way, we will know how to handle the finished work.
Indicate whether you want the cut directly on the edge of the artwork or a little further away, giving the distance in mm.
You will have to add bleed and crop marks to your artwork. This will give the cutting device enough room to operate as well as increase accuracy.
